About John Falkner-Heylings BSc (Podiatric Medicine), DipPodM, FPSPract, Podiatrist, Principal, Director of Clinical Studies

A Visionary Leader in Foot Health and Podiatric Medicine

On leaving technical school, John embarked upon an apprenticeship in Technical Dentistry which led him directly into Medical Physics (radiation therapy). Looking for autonomy, he gained Chiropody Part 1 and 2 Diplomas, followed by a Diploma in Biomechanics and Orthotics. His application quickly translated into a thriving surgery base, earning him a reputation for excellence in patient care.
John’s passion for education and innovation culminated in the founding of the School of Chiropody and Podiatric Medicine in 1996. Here, he channelled his expertise into writing and teaching, authoring the first diploma course for the School and writing the supporting literature necessary to make the program a success. Under his leadership, the School transitioned into the College of Foot Health Practitioners in response to the Health Bill of 1999, which reserved professional titles and introduced the role of the Foot Health Practitioner (FHP). This strategic pivot has since positioned the College at the forefront of training for independent private practice, a testament to John’s foresight and ability to navigate industry changes.
In 2007, John further solidified his leadership in the field by earning a BSc in Podiatric Medicine through New College Durham, an achievement that enhanced his confidence and honed his skills as a writer and clinical educator. Today, the College of Foot Health Practitioners, under John’s stewardship, remains the leader in providing Level 4 training for safe and effective independent practice, anticipating and adapting to seismic shifts in the profession.
Outside his professional pursuits, John is an avid model railway enthusiast (n gauge), a dedicated aquarist (tropical and cold-water), and a passionate gardener, often quipping that his gardening is closer to forestry than gardening. These hobbies reflect the same hands-on attention to detail that he brings to his work in podiatric medicine.
John’s career is a testament to the power of dedication, innovation, and leadership. His contributions have not only shaped the field of foot health but have also set a standard for excellence in private practice education.
